This presentation will discuss common illnesses of the time, some contemporary medical treatments, and home remedies available in the Austen household. We will also examine how new medical discoveries improved the health of Jane Austen’s family, friends, and Great Britain in general.

Kathleen Whitley is a retired psychiatrist with an interest in the history of medicine and public health. She is a member of the Denver/Boulder Region of JASNA.
